DAVID HOCKNEY RESIDENCE
The design of this private residence for the acclaimed artist evolved out of a series of conversations about his fascination with the spatial effects of perspective. A preliminary scheme with mostly rectilinear forms soon changed into one based on more skewed geometries after the client asked “Couldn’t we have be a few more mad angles?”
The architecture was influenced by Hockney’s painterly interests which in turn transformed the house into a new subject for his art making.
A view through the library window toward a small garden was transformed into a make believe undersea world. A variety of fish shapes were hand painted by Hockney and suspended by nylon lines to gently “swim” in the breeze.
