SMITH RESIDENCE

This is a highly unusual 4,000 square foot, one bedroom house designed for a collector of Asian art, particularly Japanese brush paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. A number of the owner’s artworks have been donated to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The central focus of the interior is a poured in place concrete wall on which the owner exhibits a changing display of selected works from his collection. In keeping with the owner’s wishes the furnishings are minimalistic, so as to create a quiet meditative atmosphere throughout. The experience of moving through the house is more like being in a small museum than in a conventional domestic environment.
